Calvin Coolidge Vessels was born on April 2, 1927, to parents Mary and Eugene Vessels. He had eleven siblings, five who are deceased. He grew up on a farm in Fannin County and graduated from Honey Grove High School. His family loved to hear the stories of his growing up on the farm. for example, the way he learned to swim was by being thrown into the nearby creek by his older brother James.
