Robert A. BlackerbyOctober 31, 1931 ~ July 6, 2017 (age 85)
Robert Alvah Blackerby, also known as “Bob” and “Blackie”, age 85, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away peacefully July 6, 2017 from Alzheimer’s disease. He was born October 31, 1931 in Plainview, Texas, to Kyle and Opal (Pope) Blackerby. He grew up in Abilene. On December 27, 1953 he married Martha McCartney of Winters, Texas. He was stationed at Heilbronn, Germany with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife Martha of Mesquite; son, Robert Carl Blackerby of Plano; daughter, Roberta Blackerby Goodman and her husband, Devlon of Bertram, TX; grandson, Robert James Blackerby of Denver, Colorado and his wife, Angela (and great grandsons, Robert, Michael, and Walker); grand-daughters, Melissa Blackerby of Plano, Sara Ky Goodman of Austin, and Raven Goodman of Lake Buchanan, Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Baby Frank.
Blackie graduated from Hardin Simmons University and received two Masters Degrees in Mathematics from North Texas University and University of Illinois. He was a Baptist Student Union sponsor at San Jacinto College where he taught math. He taught math for teachers for the Teacher Education Association in Houston. In Dallas, he dedicated himself to the Dallas County Community College District, teaching at El Centro, Eastfield, and Richland Community College. He was deeply proud of his Professor Emeritus status.
His poems are published in the National Library of Poetry.
