Bertha Ozelma Collum (Cook)August 22, 1924 ~ November 8, 2017 (age 93)
Bertha Ozelma Cook was born August 22, 1924, in Fate, Texas to Minnie Pearl Marshall and William Dewey Morgan. Bertha went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. She is proceeded in death by her husband, Grady Clarence Cook, her parents and several brothers and sisters. Bertha is survived by her daughter and son in law, Hazel and David Elmore of Hewitt, Texas; son, Hershall Ray Cook of Kemp, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Mariela Cook of Lancaster, Texas; grandchildren, Lori and Erich Baker of Waco, Texas, Scott and Angela Elmore of Crockett, Texas and Danna and Jay Lockett of San Antonio, Texas; great grandchildren, Tyler Elmore, Tristen Baker, Jude Baker, Keaton Baker, Kate Lockett, Leighton Lockett, Taylor Lockett; sister-in-law, Maurine Territo of Mesquite, Texas.
Bertha was born before the depression to tenant farmers who moved from town to town with eight kids and all their belongings on a Model-T truck. Despite having to miss school every year for months at a time to harvest cotton, she graduated valedictorian her senior year. She was a spit fire, but loved the Lord. She spent her adult years being a preacher’s wife, mother of three and often working two or more jobs to feed her family. She was a country girl who loved racing cars, playing slots and yelling “BINGO!” If you met her, she might have even tried to sell you a car or two. She was a warm and caring woman who rarely met a stranger.
A graveside service will be held 10 am Monday, November 27, 2017, Laurel Oaks Memorial Park in Mesquite, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
